Parks & Recreation

Almena Township is home to a variety of beautiful natural landscapes and recreational opportunities.

Nature & Outdoors

Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery has a number of nature trails that are open year round at no charge. The visitor center has seasonal hours and offers a wonderful educational opportunity.

The Portman Nature Preserve features 189 acres of rolling hills, upland oak forest, fen and marshland, three spring-fed lakes, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Located near Mattawan and just a few minutes from Kalamazoo and Paw Paw the Portman Nature Preserve features high quality prairie fen, wetland, savanna and woodland habitats as well as water from 3 lakes, a creek, and hundreds of springs.

Our own Almena Township Hall also has a series of trails as well as a playground, picnic pavilion, basketball court with ample parking and green space to explore.

Food & Harvest

The Almena Farmers Market leases the township pavilion and is open from May through October. Hours are 9:00 am - 1:00 pm every Saturday. There are plants for the garden. And there are baked goods -- pies, cookies, bread - jams and jellies. And some very unique arts and crafts. Stop by and visit.
